The Vassall Centre Trust

Sue Porter

Sue’s background was originally in social work, and later social policy and practice development, with a focus on older and disabled people. Since 1998 she has worked as a researcher, and she is currently working at the Norah Fry Research Centre, at the University of Bristol, a centre for disability studies.

As well as research, Sue’s skills include supporting groups to communicate and learn together, and she has a particular commitment to working with groups who might otherwise find it hard to exert influence, and to developing approaches which enable people to be heard and to hear each other. She has been involved in many large scale community engagement initiatives, influencing the planning of town centres and community facilities, as well as health and social services.

Sue believes that what disabled us is society's attitude to disabled people and she has a passionate commitment to projects that challenge disabling attitudes

Sue lives just over the Severn in Monmouthshire, with her partner and a small menagerie consisting of a dog, a cat and two ferrets.

In addition to being a Director at Vassall Centre and her role at the Norah Fry Research Centre, Sue is a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Management, University of Bristol and a Visiting Fellow at the School of Management, University of Bath. Before moving to Wales she was a trustee of an NHS General Practice and Camphill Community (St Lukes, Stroud), and of a drugs rehabilitation centre (Inishfree, Nailsworth).
